Safety On Campus

Date Posted: September 15, 2009
We as a Student Senate regularly have discussed areas in campus safety and security that need attention or improvement.

Currently, we have been seeking to increase the police patrols visible at night, crosswalk safety, vehicle security, and security cameras in high traffic public areas.

Potentially new projects we have looked into are sponsoring self-defense classes, providing inexpensive options for pepper spray or steering wheel clubs.

In your post, please include a detailed explanation of the problem and any suggestions you may have.

If there is any way in which we can improve your experience with safety at Wayne State, please let us know.

It seems like many of the safety issues that happen at Wayne are students walking around campus late at night. Maybe there is some sort of program that could be started to give students a ride home or to/from class after a certain time when it is dark and students shouldn't be out walking alone.

There are homeless people outside of several buildings at Wayne. I understand the police can't be watching them every second, or tell them to get off campus if they're just walking through. However,I don't think its fair to be bothered for change when I spend my hard earned money at an institution of higher learning that has the homeless urinating in the more desolate areas of campus.

It seems to me there is only one logical solution to the issue of the homeless on campus. If it is impossible to legally impose on a ban on the presence, then the school administration must impose a rule forbidding students from giving them money. I'm not saying immediate expulsion should be the reprimand (although I would in no way object to it) but some form of punishment for those caught submitting to the panhandlers must be put in place. Maybe we'd see fewer homeless if we'd stop giving them our money.

How about providing a police presence on the medical school campus? A MSU D.O. student got robbed within 500 feet of the main entrance to the medical school. The school's response? Nothing. WSU's campus safety is the biggest joke of all time.

The council suggests this measure: "providing inexpensive options for pepper spray or steering wheel clubs" The student council is apparently unaware that pepper spray is ILLEGAL on campus under the WSU student code of conduct: See here http://bog.wayne.edu/code/2_31_02.php Specifically statue 2.31.02.095 If you get robbed, assaulted, or raped on campus you have no legal way to defend yourself. Way to go Wayne.

Wayne State campus should be restricted to WSU students because there is this random guy that doesnt go to WSU and he just randomly comes up to girls asking them for their number, being annoying, around the the UGL and Student Center area.

1. Security patrols should be increased for people who need to travel around campus at night (car service, walking escort, whatever). 2. Make common areas (inside buildings, main thoroughfare walkways) off-limits to non-WSU students without permission and STRICTLY enforce this measure. This permission should be easily obtained for legitimate visitors and readily accessible. Finding non-students is not a difficult task. 3. Have easily-identifiable police stroll across the main areas of the campus. They may not serve much tangible purpose in catching perpetrators, but seeing a physical police presence walking around makes most people feel safe. 4. Better lighting for main walkways. Replace burnt out lights. This is the 21st Century people, get some powerful LED lights.

I would like to see concealed carry allowed on campus. Other universities have allowed it without any problems.

I think there needs to be increased security/police on the WSU campus. Especially in the UGL and classrooms. Just a week ago my boyfriend walked into the bathroom on the first floor only to see a homeless man with his pants around his ankles, washing his genitalia in the middle of the day. I think it is completely necessary to make it mandatory to swipe your school ID in order to get into the buildings on campus, especially the UGL.

On 2nd Ave, the blocks between Warren to Hancock to Forest is some of the darkest areas. It's normally pretty busy during the day but at night it slows down a lot and is really scary walking home/to my car in the pitch dark. Something needs to be done from whomever is in charge of those street lights to get them all functioning! It's the silliest reason for people to have their cars stolen (like I did) from that block or be mugged because it's the darkest block but it's still a great area during the day!
